We want the world to see the amazing art our children make after school! We feel it is important for our young artists to have their work shown in the community. What better chance to display their work than a gallery showing in the Alameda 2nd Friday Art Walk.
We teamed up with our friends at Speedpro East Bay, who offered to host the event. We decided the theme would be Recycled Art using their donated materials. Speedpro is a large format print shop that continuously supplies us with all of their excess scraps which gives our kids a chance to create a new life for things that may otherwise end up in the recycling bin. It’s up cycling at its best!
We made totem poles and a rocket out of the small and large tubes. These were worked on collectively and individually. They are colorful and playful and kids had so much fun doing then.
We also chopped up scrap pieces of foam core and spray painted them in various colors, these became the bases for our Rock Art. The Rock Art was inspired by a local artist, Mark Tucker, who actually gave us a pile of his extra rocks collected from around the country to use. Their instructions were to tell a story with the rocks then glue them down to the foam core. We had a man in a boat, an elephant and lots of outdoor scenes. Mark attended the show, brought along his work for the kids to see, and met the young artists. It was wonderful to watch their eyes light us as they showcased their work alongside his.
