Inspired by Dale Chihuly

I took my boys to see the Chihuly exhibit at the de Young Museum in San Francisco a few summers ago.  We still talk about the amazing glass work we saw.  I wanted my afternoon kids to see his work.  While looking online, I found a great lesson on Artopotamus.  I purchased a number of plastic wine glasses, we already had our small oven and permanent markers.  We were ready.  The children loved the photos of his work.

The idea of the lesson was to color the plastic glasses with the markers and melt them in the broiler.  It was a lot of fun to watch them melt.  Most of the kids wanted to take their pieces home.  I kept some to make our class sculpture.  They all had opinions on just where their pieces should be placed on the sculpture.  Most of them wanted them right on top in the center. They have asked again and again to do this again.
